Peru have stunned the footballing world and reached it’s first Copa America final since
1975 by defeating back-to-back champions Chile 3-0 at the Arena do Grêmio in Brazil.
Chile started off strong with some nice football resulting with a Charles Aranguiz shot
flashing just wide.
Peru then proceeded to score their first of the match in the 21st minute. A cross from
the right-side was then flicked to the back post and beautifully finished by Andre
Carrillo.
After a long ball forward and some horrific goal keeping, Peru had their second in the 38th minute. Andre Carillo received the ball on the wing, wrong footed the Chilean keeper (who
charged off his line to confront the Los Incas winger) then crossed the ball to
Yashimar Yotún who controlled the ball with his chest and thunder-bolted the ball into
the defenseless Chilean net.
Chile were stunned, they had given Peru a 2-0 lead going into the second half. They
seemed like they were up for the challenge when Eduardo Vargas hit the crossbar with
a looping header just five minutes into the second half. Peru stood firm during the
Chilean onslaught and kept their 2-goal advantage.
Peru then finished off the game late on when Paolo Guerrero rounded the La Roja keeper
and slotted the ball in to make it 3-0. Chile won a 90th minute penalty where Eduardo
Vargas attempted a Panenka penalty but was saved by Peruvian keeper.
Peru will now face Brazil, the team that demolished Los Incas 5-0 earlier on in the
tournament.
