The Hobart Zebras have come out winners coming from three goals down to defeat the Kingborough Lions 4-3. A hatrick from former Young Matilda Jessie Williams helped put away the Lions away at Lightwood Park. That win will keep their title hopes alive as they keep the pressure on ladder leaders Olympia Warriors.
Natalie Roubickova was the first to score for the day. Roubickova made a great run into the penalty box and hit into the top corner past Zebras keeper Shelley Cook for the Lions first.
Laura Davis added to her already impressive goalscoring form when she picked up a brace in quick succesion after nailing her shots home in the bottom left corner on both occasions to give the Lions a 3-0 lead, just 23 minutes of play completed
Last week Olympia downed Zebras 3-0 so the pressure was already on for the away side to come out victorious and keep the pressure on the Warriors at the top. Sure enough they rallied back into the contest, even without Manager Chris Hey who was on the way to the game from the airport.
Jessie Williams was the first on the scoresheet for the Zebras in the 40th minute. Williams was all alone on the outside the box and picked out the top corner beautifully for the Zebras first of the game.
Williams completed a brace before halftime when she breezed passed the Lions defence and shot home while being outside of the penalty box to give the Zebras a 2-3 scoreline heading into half time.
The Lions thought they had added to their lead in the 52nd minute when a header appeared to have crossed the goal line but the referee waved play on much to the dismay of the Lions.
Zoe Nichols got the equaliser in some fashion for the Zebras later on. Lions keeper Olivia Gardner was off her line and Nichols chipped it right over her head to make the game 3-3 with all to play for!
William’s notched her hattrick when she eased past a couple defenders, found herself one on one with the keeper and buried it home for the eventual deciding goal of the game!
After the game Hey praised his team. “Just shows the character we have to comeback, good to see Zoe on the scoresheet, Jessie is quality”.
“To me if we keep our injuries down, play consistently hard games week in week out, we can still win the league.”
